A big jolt of I-can-do-it.

You want confidence. That's the #1 thing our skills camp participants tell us they get from our instructors. After spending a weekend getting hands-on instruction on a variety of mountain bike skills, they consistently tell us that they come home with their confidence vastly improved. They're more confident on their bikes, able to ride trails they couldn't before, able to ride harder and with more grace and flow, able to keep up - and pass - people they couldn't keep up with before.

Join us in spectacular Fernie, British Columbia for this weekend camp and your confidence levels might just go off the charts - sorry, we can't be held responsible if you start getting a little cocky and showing off your newfound skills.

You'll get hands-on instruction with our amazing team of certified, friendly instructors - and no attitude. You'll work on specific skills and drills at Fernie's awesome skills park. You'll ride amazing singletrack and choose from Fernie's network of over 80 trails. And you'll stay right in downtown Fernie, walking distance from some great restaurants and bars for some aprés-bike celebrating.

Just don't call us if you start leaving all your mountain biker friends in the dust...

Is This Ride For You?

This Ride is for you if you're interested in improving your mountain bike skills and getting more confidence on your bike (and in life!). You have at least a year of mountain bike experience, and describe yourself as strong beginner to expert (even experts can learn a thing or two from our instructors, and we'll have separate groups according to skill level). You're willing to try new things and you love to ride!
  • ""Hey Sacred Rides, just had to report that I did a ride the other night and kicked the uphill's ass! Yeah! That's thanks to Mike and Johanna and the clinic a few weekends ago. Gracias! That felt GOOD!"

    Ame-Lia Tamburrini, Canada
  • "I attended the Mtn. Bike Skills Camp in Fernie earlier this month (July 3-4) and just wanted to let you know what an AMAZING time I had. The coaches were fantastic - supportive, encouraging and so, so skilled. I am so much more confident on my bike and can actually brag a little about my newfound technical skills. ...I will definitely be back! Thanks again for such a great experience :)"

    Carolyn Thomson
  • "Awesome camp! We learned a ton!"

    Mike Merrell, Canada
  • "Sweet times in Fernie! Thanks Johanna and Mike for a great weekend. Took home so much stuff to continue to work on!"

    Ame-Lia Tamburrini, Canada
  • "Thanks for the great weekend! This was my second time riding with Sacred Rides and I would recommend you to anyone I know and would ride again with this group! "

    Lori O'Brien, Canada

Friday - Arrive in Fernie

Check-in at the lodge is from 6:00 pm onwards, and our representatives will be waiting at our lodge to meet you. There are several restaurants in Fernie serving excellent food.

Day 1 (Saturday)

We'll spend the first morning doing basic skills such as bike handling, proper braking technique, gear shifting, and breaking up into different skill level groups. After skills training, we'll had back to the lodge for a hearty homemade lunch on the deck of our lodge. When we've had our fill and had time to digest, we'll head out to the trails for a full afternoon of riding to test out some of our new skills. After riding for several hours, we'll return to the lodge and if the weather permits, we'll take in some additional activities such as swimming in the nearby Elk River before heading out to a local restaurant for dinner.

n.b. dinner is not included in the trip price.

Day 2 (Sunday)

After breakfast, we'll spend the morning working on more skills at Fernie's brand-new skills course. After a full morning of riding, we'll stop for lunch and fuel up for a big afternoon of biking. We ride to Ridgemont, ground zero for the Fernie mountain biking scene. There are dozens of trails fanning out from the fire road access, which can be linked up, and we'll pick and choose the best ones, such as 'Kid's Stuff' (an introduction to technical stunt riding with small stunts very close to the ground), 'Splitting Bears' and 'Eric's Trail' (a great descent). We'll finish riding at 5 pm to give you ample time to return to Calgary or wherever else you may be coming from.

n.b. Extra nights at our lodge can be purchased for $50(Cdn)/night/pp

Pickup & Drop-off Information

Please note that we do not offer airport pickup and dropoff service for this trip. However, there may be a shuttle scheduled for picking up riders from our weeklong women's skills camps. If there is space, we can offer you a pickup service. Please see the schedule page for the exact pickup times for either of these trips. Unfortunately we cannot offer dropoff service. We recommend renting a car for the easiest possible option. If you are not making your own way to Fernie and need to return to Calgary, there are two options: Greyhound bus or private taxi service.

Travelling with your bike

Pika Packworks BafIf you've never traveled with your bike, don't worry - it's much easier than you think! If you don't have a case for your bike, we recommend one of two options:

1) if you think you may be travelling more than once with your bike, then we recommend purchasing a purpose-made bike bag. This will protect your bike from damages, and makes shlepping your bike around a little bit easier than with a rigid box or cardboard box. We sell beautiful handmade bags by PikaPackworks in the United States. For more information, visit our online store.

2) If you think this is the only trip you'll take with your bike for a while, then you can pick up a cardboard travel box for your bike at your local store. Some stores will also pack your bike up for you for a fee.

Alternately, you can courier your bike to our partner store in Fernie. For $40 they will take delivery of your bike and assemble it. We will then pick up your bike and have it waiting for you at our lodge.

Assembling your bike when you arrive

We have bike stands and a full toolset available for assembling your bike once you arrive. You can build your bike the night you arrive, or the next morning. We will have a prearranged time for building bikes and our staff are on hand for assistance.

Trip Additions

We have a few add-ons that will make your trip even more memorable. These can be added when you make your booking or added later:

  • post-ride therapeutic massage with a RMT(1 hour): $100 Cdn
  • extra nights at our lodge in Fernie: $45 Cdn/night/per person/double

Travel Insurance (non-Canadians and those without provincial health coverage)

Travel insurance, including emergency evacuation coverage, is compulsory for all our tours. Please do not attend any of our tours without purchasing appropriate insurance coverage. We recommend that you purchase travel insurance that includes cancellation protection so that you will be covered in the event that you are unable to attend our tour (due to injury, illness or other unforeseen circumstances) or in the unlikely event that our tour must be cancelled.

Insurance can be purchased online at www.adventureinsurance.ca

Passports & Visas

All travelers require a valid passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity). Citizens of some countries will also require a visa. For more information, please contact your local Canadian embassy, or passport office.

Health Requirements

Vaccinations are not required for Canada, and Canada has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Should you experience illness or injury while in Canada, rest assured that you will receive the best care possible.

Fitness Requirements

You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to bike at a moderate pace for up to three hours a day in order to fully enjoy the spectacular scenery and riding on this trip. There will also be plenty of time for relaxation at our lodges or exploring the local shopping at a leisurely pace.

Safety & Security

To maximize your safety during our tours you should exercise common sense and caution at all times. We recommend that you always stick to set travel arrangements, and avoid unknown areas. We also recommend that you wear minimal jewelry and that you keep valuable items safely stored. Always keep a copy of your passport, airline tickets, travelers checks and credit card numbers separate from where you keep the originals.

Meals

On this trip, all breakfasts and lunches are included in the trip price. Dinners can be taken in local restaurants or you can use the kitchen at our lodge (from past experience, most groups decide together whether they will eat out or stay in on a particular night). You should budget $10 Cdn per meal prepared in-kitchen, or $15-$20 per dinner in local restaurants (depending on the quality of restaurants you choose).

Other expenses

Aside from meals, there are no required additional expenses for this trip, but you might like to take spending money for such things as souvenir shopping, nightlife and Internet cafes.

Laundry

The Red Tree Lodge has a washer and dryer for your use.

Internet

Fernie has several internet cafés. We are working on wireless access at our lodges in Fernie and Golden and hope to have this in place for summer 2009.

After learning to ride on the North Shore of Vancouver and in Whistler in early 2000, she has been coaching since 2003 after racing elite DH and XC and guiding since 2007. Living in Fernie for the last 5 years, she's blessed with amazing local trails as well as traveling and riding all over North America. Johanna is Certified by CMIC, Endless Biking, NCCP, Yoga Alliance, Sports Nutrition, Advanced Wilderness First Aid, she also teaches yoga and surfing in Mexico and Patagonia as well as Essential Yoga Studio in Fernie.

Driver.

Rarely seen off the water until landing in Fernie, Gordo's adjusting to the epic terrain nicely. Having not really ridden a bike since leaving Ontario, it's often a fun day riding with him. He's not use to "multi-speed" bikes , disc brakes or suspension. If your looking for something to do on the off days, just ask him. If he's not driving he'll probably take you rafting, tell you of a lake or swim hole close by. A great source of knowledge, stories and music, you probably won't have to ask!
