"We loved the local guides and the things they showed us that we never would have learned about as average "tourists." Marian Cremin, USA

Why do we require an application?

Our application process is in response to two of the most common questions our Riders have prior to booking a trip with us:

1) Am I skilled/fit enough to participate in this Ride?
2) Will the other people on my Ride be skilled/fit enough?

Ensuring that you - and the other Riders on your Ride - are a good fit for the Ride selected is of paramount importance to us. We want to help you pick the Ride that's perfect for you, and ensure that everyone booked on a Ride is on the right Ride for them. That's why we want to know a bit more about you - your mountain biking history, where you ride, how often, etc... - before we take your money.

We review every application and if, based on your responses, we think you're a good fit, we'll approve your application and you'll receive a link to place a deposit. If we think you might not be a good fit (either too skilled or not skilled enough for the Ride you chose), then we'll give you a call to discuss your preferences in greater detail.

Please note: our application process isn't about excluding anyone, or making anyone feel like they're not 'good enough' to participate in one of our Rides. It's about ensuring that you end up on the right Ride for you, with people of similar skill, fitness and riding preferences. In the end this ends up being a much better experience for everyone.

This incredible 11-day itinerary serves up a heaping portion of history, culture and outdoor adventure, taking you from the foot hills of the world's second largest mountain range, all the way up to the world-renowned Machu Picchu and through one of the most biodiverse areas of the world: the Amazon jungle.

Unlike the tourist hordes, you'll get acquainted with a side of Peru very few people do on the best modes of transportation to take it all in: by mountain bike and by foot.

In addition to the spectacular geography, your local guides won't miss an opportunity to show you the fascinating cultural heritage of Peru as you travel through remote villages where Quechua is still the main language spoken, stay in locally-owned lodges, visit spectacular Inca sites and bike along the remarkable Inca trail network. As it so happens, this wealth of trails and foot paths make for the ultimate mountain biking and hiking adventure, crisscrossing some seriously spectacular scenery along the way.

IS THIS RIDE FOR YOU?

You are an adventure-seeker looking to get out of your element and experience the lure and vibrancy of Peruvian culture in a more meaningful way than behind the window of a tour bus. You have a good level of fitness, and maybe a bit of experience on a mountain bike. You are comfortable riding dirt roads and relatively easy singletrack for up to 4 hours or 40km a day. The thought of spending a night camping in the Amazon excites you!

Day 1: International Arrivals.

Most of the international flights arrive late at night. Our guides will pick you up from Lima airport and transfer you to a cozy hotel located in the Miraflores area, south of Lima. Miraflores is a nice neighborhood where you can find great shops, restaurants and many attractions.  Check-in to your hotel in Lima on Day 1 is at 1:00 p.m.  If you will be arriving prior and need to get into your hotel room, you can add an extra pre-Ride hotel night in Lima at the time of booking or through your Rider Dashboard after booking.

Day 2: Flight to Cusco.

After a delicious breakfast, we'll board the late morning flight to Cusco. Arriving in the early afternoon, we'll have lots of time to stretch our legs and discover some of the many sights of this bustling city and UNESCO world heritage site. In the evening, we'll have the trip briefing with a delicious meal in front of the main plaza.

Day 3: Cusco Inca Secrets

Today we'll start riding our bikes straight from our hotel in Cusco. We'll climb to the upper part of the city and reach the Inca site of Saqsayhuaman, offering amazing views of the impressive fortress that is the city of Cusco. After this first stop, we'll continue climbing and passing more Inca sites on our way until we reach a small village on top of Cusco. We'll ride mostly dirt roads and  fun singletrack, stopping along the way to visit several impressive Inca sites. We'll descend back into Cusco, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our hotel for a relaxing evening. We'll ride a total of 25Km in approximately 4 hours.

Day 4: Sacred Valley Treasures

Early in the morning, after a nutritious breakfast, we'll be transferred to Chinchero, one of the most important Inca sites near the Sacred Valley, located at an altitude of 3,700m (12,139 ft.) From here, it’s possible to see the entire plateau of Maras and the Vilcanota’s Mountain Range with its +5,000 meter glaciers like Chicon and Veronica. We will cross agricultural fields bordering Lake Huaypo and reach the Inca site of Moray at an altitude of 3,600m (11,811 ft.). We'll stop here and explore this Inca agricultural site and its round terraces. After our visit to Moray, we will continue our tour riding an Inca trail that will take us to the town of Maras and its Inca Salt Mines. It's truly a spectacular place where we will have amazing views of the Sacred Valley below us. Finally we'll end the day in the town of Ollantaytambo, where we'll stay for the night. We'll ride a total of 40 Km. in approximately four hours before we reach Ollantaytambo.

Day 5: Machu Picchu

We highly recommend visiting Machu Picchu as an option for this day (can be added to your trip for an additional price). The tour starts with a train ride from Ollantaytambo to the town of Aguas Calientes. Then we'll take a shuttle bus up to the Citadel. Machu Picchu (like most of the Quechua names of towns and different sites in the region) is a compound word that comes from Machu = old or ancient, and Picchu = peak or mountain; therefore, Machu Picchu is translated as "Old Mountain". The famous mountain that is seen in front, and appears in most of the classical views of the site is named Wayna Picchu (Young Mountain). We'll have most the day to explore the entire citadel and learn about all of its well preserved secrets. At the end of the day we'll head back down to Cusco.

Day 6: From Cusco to Tres Cruces

Today we start our journey to the Amazon jungle. We'll be transferred from Cusco to the mountain pass that divides the Sacred Valley with the Eastern side of the Andes. We'll start riding our bikes at an altitude of 3,700m (12,139ft.) passing through pre Inca graves and then descend to the small town of Paucartambo, located at an altitude of 2,900m (9,514ft.) where we'll stop for lunch. We'll then put our bikes on the bus and climb to Tres Cruces and reach the entrance to Manu National Park. Tres Cruces is located at an altitude of 3,630m (11,909ft.) and it’s the last mountain before the Amazon jungle. We'll be setting up tents and camping overnight.

Day 7: From Tres Cruces to San Pedro Lodge

Early this morning, we'll catch one of the best sunrises on the Planet! We'll start riding our bikes down to the Amazon jungle. It’s almost all descending from here as we experience a dramatic change in the vegetation and weather. We'll reach our lodge in San Pedro located at an altitude of 1,300m (4,265ft.) and have a delicious lunch. This afternoon, we'll set out on a hike to find the Cock of the Rocks, the national bird of Peru. They are found in tropical and subtropical rainforests close to rocky areas, where they build their nests. The males are magnificent birds, not only because of their bright orange or red colors, but also because of their very prominent fan-shaped crests. They are wary animals and primarily feed on fruits and berries. After spotting a few, we'll head back to the lodge for dinner and a good night's rest.

Day 8: From San Pedro Lodge to Pantiacolla Lodge

After breakfast, we'll start riding our bikes and keep descending until we reach the lower lands of the Amazon jungle. This is a different area where you'll definitely start feeling the humidity and the hot weather of the jungle. We'll pass through several small villages, cross big rivers and reach the village of Atalaya where we'll board a small boat to Pantiacolla Lodge. From there, we'll be able to see the magnificent wildlife of the area while cruising down the Alto Madre de Dios River. After lunch, we'll hike a short trail through the surrounding area before soaking in the river to cool down.

Day 9: From Pantiacolla Lodge to San Pedro Lodge

Early this morning, after a hearty breakfast, we'll hike a remarkable 5km trail where we'll likely spot monkeys, frogs, tapirs, capybaras and much more wildlife! After lunch in Pantiacolla Lodge, we'll hop on our bikes and return to San Pedro Lodge on a nice, easy cruise.

Day 10: from San Pedro Lodge to Cusco

Early this morning, we'll shuttle to the mountain pass of Pisac and start descending on our bikes down the remarkable Sacred Valley. At the end of the day, we'll reach Cusco fairly late in the evening and feast on our final dinner together with a round of Pisco Sours!

Day 11: Final Goobyes and Transfer to Lima

We have reached the last day of our amazing trip in Peru and it's time to say goodbye to Cusco and its wonderful Inca Trails. Flights depart daily at 8:45, 9:55, 11:05 and 13:30, making it possible go shopping in the Indian markets of Cusco.
